Daily Market Highlights (06.01.11)

  • Local equity market still in negative territory on lack of support in the two large banks. MSE Share Index down another 0.4% today to close below the 3,700-point level as MIA’s 0.6% rise is outweighed by further declines in HSBC and BOV.   • Rizzo Farrugia MGS Index also down 0.4% as the Central Bank of Malta Stockbroker steeply reduces its bid prices in line with the recovery of the 10-year Eurozone benchmark yield to the 2.95% level. The market price of the 5.25% MGS 2030 slipped 42 basis points to 102.50%.
  • Downturn in BOV persists during the pen-ultimate trading session prior to the cut-off for entitlement to the bonus share issue. BOV shares slump another 1.3% to drop back to the €3.77 level on volumes of 10,865 shares. Best bids now placed at €3.71 whilst lowest offers pitched at the €3.779 level. Shareholders as at close of trading tomorrow will be entitled to the 1 for 5 bonus share issue.
  • HSBC share price closes the day 0.3% lower at €3.16. Increased volumes of almost 31,000 shares today with best bids now in the market at €3.082 whilst lowest offers placed at the €3.20 level.
  • The only positive performer of the day was Malta International Airport. The share price of the airport operator recouped yesterday’s 0.6% drop to regain its recent high of €1.66 across six trades amounting to 7,191 shares. Further shares on offer at the last closing price whilst best bids pitched at the €1.65 level.
  • MaltaPost maintained its all-time high of €1.00 on a single trade of 1,500 shares. The Company yesterday published its September 2009 full-year results revealing a 7% increase in after-tax profits to €2.1 million on the back of increased revenue and a lower tax charge.   • GO also unchanged at the €1.94 after again recovering from an intra-day low of €1.919. Low volumes of 6,400 shares exchanged today with best bids now in the market at €1.85 whilst lowest offers pitched at the €1.945 level.
  • Middlesea Insurance maintained the €1.00 level on volumes of 9,500 shares. Bids outstanding at €0.98 with lowest offers pitched at the €1.015 level.
