Daily Market Highlights (14.10.11)

  • The MSE Share Index recovered by 0.4% to close the week at 3,120.445 points mainly due to the 3.7% rise in index heavy-weight IHI. Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, Malta International Airport plc and MaltaPost plc also ended the day in positive territory. The two large banks (BOV and HSBC) however retreated whilst GO, Plaza, RS2 Software and Crimsonwing closed unchanged. Download a copy of today’s Equity Market Summary.
  • On the local bond market, the Rizzo Farrugia MGS Index gained 0.24% to end the week at 983.782 points after Eurozone yields retreated to the 2.17% level. The indicative bid price of the 5.25% MGS 2030 rose to 100.76% after the Central Bank of Malta stockbroker lowered it to 100.20% yesterday.
  • HSBC’s share price reversed yesterday’s gains as it slipped 0.4% to €2.64 level. Two trades totalling 2,488 shares were traded during this morning’s session with offers outstanding at €2.66 whilst best bids are placed at the closing price.
  • BOV’s shares retreated by a further 0.8% to close at its 2011 low of €2.45 over high volumes totalling 105,691 shares. Few other offers remain unsatisfied at the €2.48 level whilst highest bids are placed at the current price. Following this morning’s declines, the equity ended the week 2% down. BOV generally publishes its preliminary full-year results by the end of October.
  • Further demand for MIA’s shares helped the equity gain a further 0.6% this morning to close the week at a 9-month high of €1.66. 54,012 shares were exchanged over 6 transactions with offers now placed higher at €1.68. MIA is this week’s best performer with a gain of 5.8%.
  • International Hotel Investments plc reversed all of earlier losess this week as renewed demand – 91,100 shares – helped the share price recover by 3.7% to €0.82. Offers are now pitched at the €0.825 level whilst best bids are placed at €0.791.
  • Two trades totalling 36,666 Simonds Farsons Cisk plc shares pulled the equity 1.7% higher to close the week at €1.83 – just 0.5% below its 2011 high of €1.84. 209 shares remain on offer at €1.845 however bids are placed substantially lower at €1.70.
  • GO plc close unchanged at €1.10 after it hit an intra-day low of €1.051. Over 2,800 shares changed hands with further offers outstanding at the last traded price.
  • IT companies RS2 and Crimsonwing also closed unchanged. RS2’s equity traded at the €0.599 level – minimally below its 2011 high of €0.60 on 8,200 shares while Crimsonwing touched a new all-time low of €0.30 before it edged higher to end the trading session at €0.338 (12,500 shares). Although 28,144 shares are placed on offer at the closing price, no bids remain.
  • Low volumes totalling 555 MaltaPost shares were exchanged at the €0.99 level over a single trade.
  • Plaza also traded unchanged at its 2011 high of €1.80 as 3,000 shares were exchanged over 2 trades. Whilst further shares remain on offer at the closing price, bids are pitched significantly lower at €1.55.
