Daily Market Highlights (19.09.16)

  • Last Friday’s rebound in the MSE Share Index was short-lived as the local equity benchmark slipped 0.2% back to 4,418.109 points as most of the active equities during this morning’s session trended in negative territory. Download a copy of today’s Equity Market Summary.
  • On the bond market, the RF MGS Index was practically unchanged today at 1,165.582 points as the rebound in the benchmark 10-year German Bund yield to 0.018% was offset by a correction in Spanish and Italian 10-year yields to 1.05% and 1.32% respectively. Investors awaiting the outcome of the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan monetary policy meetings which end on Wednesday.
  • Trading activity in the 2.4% MGS 2041 (I) r continued to be particularly robust with a further €1.05 million (nominal) changing hands today, pushing the price of this stock to 107.76% – which is 12 basis points higher than last Friday’s closing level and significantly higher than the indicative bid price quoted by the Central Bank of Malta of 105.20%.
  • Amongst today’s negative performers, Bank of Valletta plc shed 0.4% to €2.25 across three trades totalling 26,666 shares.
  • Similarly, new sell orders forced the share price of RS2 Software plc to retreat by 1.5% back to the €1.615 level on volumes of 24,162 shares.
  • Negative movements also in the equity of International Hotel Investments plc as it eased 1.4% to €0.626 on just one transaction amounting to 7,426 shares.
  • In the property segment, Plaza Centres plc shed 0.9% to €1.125 across 20,000 shares. This morning, the Malta Stock Exchange announced that the Company’s recently issued bonds (carrying a coupon of 3.9% and maturing in 2026) have been admitted to the Official List today with trading expected to commence as from tomorrow.
  • Malta Properties Company plc lost 0.9% to reach €0.535 across ten deals totalling 63,050 shares.
  • The only other negative performing equity today was GlobalCapital plc with a 1.8% drop back to the €0.49 level across 18,244 shares.
  • On the other hand, HSBC Bank Malta plc edged 1.35 higher to recapture the €1.62 level albeit on shallow volumes of 3,627 shares.
  • Likewise, GO plc trended in positive territory today with a marginal 0.35% uplift to close this morning’s session at the €3.159 level across 3,500 shares.
