Malta International Airport plc - September Traffic Statistics

On 4 October, Malta International Airport plc published the September 2011 traffic results. The statistics reveal a 2.4% increase in passenger movements to 382,389 when compared to the same month last year – the highest number ever registered in September. MIA explained that this increase was achieved despite a 7.8% decline in seat capacity to 459,425 seats. In fact, the average seat load factor increased by 8.2 percentage points to 83.2% from 75% registered in September 2010.

The airport operator stated that the German, French and UK markets grew by 22%, 10.2% and 3.1% respectively during September when compared to last year, however the Italian and Spanish markets declined by 5.6% and 1% respectively.

During the first nine months of the year, MIA’s passenger movements have increased by 7.9% when compared to the same period last year – totalling 2,781,802 passenger movements. This increase was mainly due to the increased seat load factor which stands at 76.1% year-to-date together with a 1.1% increase in seat capacity.

On 21 July MIA upgraded its passenger forecast for 2011. The airport operator is now expecting an increase of 3.2% during 2011 to a new record high of 3.4 million passenger movements.
