Malta International Airport plc - May Traffic Results

On 4 June, Malta International Airport plc published the traffic results for May 2012 revealing a 5.8% increase in passenger movements when compared to the same month last year, representing a record for the month of May with a total of 344,008 movements.

Meanwhile, aircraft movements increased by 2.2% while seat capacity advanced by 2.7% when compared to May 2011. MIA reported that the seat load factor went up by 2.2 percentage points when compared to the same period last year.

The statistics also showed that during May 2012, the highest increase in passengers came from the Spanish market (18.7%) followed by an increase in the German market (6%). Meanwhile, passengers travelling from France, UK and Italy increased by 5.8%, 3.5% and 2.3% respectively.

During the first five months of 2012, MIA stated passenger traffic retreated by a mere 0.4% compared to the comparable period last year as the increases registered in April and May mostly offset the drop in passengers observed during the first quarter of the year. For the first five months of the year, aircraft movements dropped 4.7% when compared to the same period in 2011 while seat capacity retreated by 5.2%. On the contrary. the average seat load factor increased by 3.6 percentage points.
