Malta International Airport plc - September Traffic Results

On 7 October, Malta International Airport plc published its September 2014 traffic results. The statistics reveal a 2.4% increase in passenger movements when compared to the same month last year to a record for the month of 463,215 passengers notwithstanding the decline in passengers from Libya given the closure of the country’s airspace since mid-July. Furthermore, TUI Cruises made one less call to the port of Malta during the month under review which negatively impacted the growth in the German market. The increased passenger traffic during September was due to a 1.1% growth in seat capacity and a 0.9% increase in aircraft movements.

During the month under review, the French market registered the largest growth of 11.1% reflecting the increased demand on the Paris route. Similarly, traffic from Italy and the UK grew by 8.9% and 6.7% respectively. Meanwhile, Spain and Germany saw a decrease of 11% and 5.7% respectively with the German market affected by the reduction in TUI Cruises.

MIA’s CEO Markus Klaushofer stated that these figures are a great follow-up to the half-million passengers hosted un August which represented the best month ever for the airport operator.

January to September 2014

During the first three quarters of 2014, MIA registered a 7.2% increase in passenger movements to more than 3.38 million when compared to the same period last year.
