Malta International Airport plc - Capital Investment Plans

On 21 December 2015, Malta International Airport plc explained the capital investments undertaken during 2015 and also revealed its plans to undertake a €78 million capital investment plan in 2016 and future years.

In 2015, MIA invested a total of €8 million across the expansion of the non-Schengen area and the new generator sets while investing significantly in its security infrastructure. Further investments were also made on the airfield with the upgrading of Taxiway Charlie and the new Emergency Operations Centre. Furthermore, MIA embellished the retails spaces (both landside and airside) whilst also having just re-opened the doors of its new food court.

On the back of the passenger growth expected to be achieved in 2015 (circa +7.3% in passenger numbers to 4.6 million), the capital investment plan of MIA includes a €6.3 million investment in the airfield comprising the rehabilitation of Apron 9, upgrades on Runway 23-05 and the replacement of the Instrument Landing System (ILS – a software which aides pilot in the landing process). Additionally, MIA will be installing a new database system to act as its information centre.

Furthermore, the existing terminal building will continue to be embellished with the refurbishment of the washrooms and the replacement of all lifts. In the meantime, MIA also has plans to expand the terminal building, a project representing a €28 million investment. The first phase of this part of the investment plan, at a cost of €8 million, will comprise an increase in the number of check-in desks and the relocation of the central security screening area in order to double its footprint to 700 square metres. Phase 2, at an estimated cost of €20 million, will entail the construction of an extension of the check-in hall and the departures area to allow for further check-in desks and gates, adding circulation and seating space across both areas.

Following the success of the SkyParks Business Centre, which is currently fully occupied, MIA is now actively working on the development of SkyParks 2. The €40 million development project will be set on a footprint of 4,000 square metres and is intended to house office space for circa 1,700 employees as well as a business hotel.
