Malta International Airport plc - February Traffic Results

On 7 March, Malta International Airport plc published the February 2017 traffic results revealing a 25.2% increase in passenger movements (+59,602 passengers) compared to the same month last year – the fourth consecutive monthly double-digit growth reflecting the expanded winter schedule as a result of the Company’s strategy of attracting more traffic in the shoulder months. The strong growth came on the back of the 22.3% increase in aircraft movements as well as the 29.4% increase in seat capacity. On the other hand, the seat load factor dropped by 2.6 percentage points to 76.8%. Meanwhile, the maximum take-off weight at the airport also experienced a 30.0% growth to reach 96,282 tonnes whilst the weight of cargo and mail increased by 25.5% to reach 1,359 tonnes.

MIA’s top markets remained largely unchanged in February, with the UK topping the list followed by Italy, Germany, Belgium, and France. More than half the increase in passengers during February came from Italy, Germany and Belgium following the enhanced connectivity to these markets. Outside of the top five markets, Spain and Poland were also important contributors to February’s total traffic. MIA noted that these two markets have been experiencing steady growth following increased efforts to redevelop the Spanish market and enhance connectivity to Eastern Europe.

Today’s announcement also revealed that Malta’s airport has been classified in third place from among 84 other European airports in the Airport Service Quality Awards 2016.
