Malta International Airport plc - July Traffic Results

On 8 August 2018, Malta International Airport plc announced its July traffic results revealing a 12.1% increase in passenger movements to a record of 756,356 passenger movements. This was more than 62,000 passenger movements superior to the previous monthly record in August 2017. The growth reflects robust increases of more than 11% in aircraft movements and seat capacity (+11.5%) as well as the highest seat load factor this year of 87.1%.

The airport operator also explained that its top five markets remained unchanged since April, with the UK occupying first place followed by Italy, Germany, France and Spain. Moreover, while the top four markets registered growth of between 14.4% and 34.3%, passenger movements relating to the German market decreased by 4.3% due to a reduced schedule by TUI cruises which, in turn, affected the cruise and fly passenger traffic throughput.

January – July 2018

During the first seven months of 2018, a total of 3,826,029 passenger movements were registered representing a 15.4% increase over the previous corresponding period. In July, MIA updated its passenger forecast and is now expecting passenger movements to grow by 13% to reach yet another record of 6.77 million passenger movements. This is higher than the company’s initial forecast for 2018 of 6.5 million passenger movements representing a growth of between 7% and 9%.
