Malta International Airport plc - October Traffic Results

On 7 November 2018, Malta International Airport plc published the October 2018 traffic results revealing an 8.4% increase in passenger movements over October 2017 to 646,559 movements – a record for the month of October. The growth registered in October 2018 was due to the 11% increase in seat capacity which offset the two percentage point drop in the seat load factor to 82.4%.

Summer Season

October also marks the end of the summer season for MIA with passenger movements amounting to 4,767,233 passenger movements during this seven-month period, representing an increase of almost 518,000 passenger movements (or +12.2%) when compared to the same period in 2017 largely reflecting the busier summer schedule coupled with a 13.7% increase in seat capacity which offset a 1.1 percentage point decline in the seat load factor.

January – October 2018

During the ten months up to October 2018, more than 5.9 million passenger movements were registered representing a 13.5% increase over the previous corresponding period. In July, the airport operator updated its 2018 passenger growth forecast to 6.77 million passenger movements (representing a growth of 13%).

Commenting on the overall performance since the start of 2018, MIA CEO Mr Alan Borg noted that “year-to-date traffic results are quite remarkable considering that last year the six million mark was only reached on the last day of 2017. While summer has now ended, over 12 routes have been extended into the winter period and more frequencies have been added on a number of routes.”
