Malta International Airport plc - February Traffic Results

On 7 March 2019, Malta International Airport plc published the February 2019 traffic results showing an increase of 2.9% in passenger movements to a record (for the month of February) of 359,395 movements. The growth came on the back of the 8.9% increase in aircraft movements as well as the 6.4% increase in seat capacity. On the other hand, the seat load factor contracted to 75.9% compared to 78.5% in February 2019.

MIA’s top markets in February 2019 were the UK, Italy, Germany, France and Spain. In aggregate, these five markets accounted for more than 60% of total passenger movements. Moreover, while the top three markets (namely the UK, Italy and Germany) all registered a drop in passenger movements ranging between -0.8% and -5.5%, France and Spain continued to register significant growth. In fact, passenger movements from France increased by 15.6% partly reflecting recent developments such as the operation of the Bordeaux and Paris Beauvais routes during the winter season for the first time and better flight frequencies on the Paris Charles de Gaulle route. Similarly, passenger movements from Spain surged by 75.4% on the back of improved connections throughout the winter season.

Meanwhile, on 6 March 2019 MIA issued a press release expressing its satisfaction on the award it received from the Airports Council International as the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ in its size category.
