Malta International Airport plc - January Traffic Results

On 7 February 2019, Malta International Airport plc published the January 2019 traffic results. Following the record passenger numbers during 2018 showing an increase of 13.2%, the airport operator kicked-off the new year with continued growth, albeit at an expected slower pace. In fact, passenger movements increased by 4.1% as the robust increases in aircraft movements (+9.9%) and seat capacity (+7.9%) were partially offset by a decline in the seat load factor to 69% compared to 71.6% in the same period last year.

The increase in passenger numbers for the month was driven by the Spanish (+87.2% in passenger movements) and the French (+12%) markets. On the other hand, MIA’s three other top markets all posted declines when compared to January 2018. In this respect, the worst performing was Germany (-8.3% in passenger movements), followed by the UK (-3.2%) and Italy (-0.8%).
