Malta International Airport plc – Quarterly Update
Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.
On 18 May 2026, Malta International Airport plc published the financial results for the first three months of 2026.
Revenues during the first three months of 2026 amounted to €32.5 million, which is 11.0% higher than the comparable figure of €29.2 million in 2025. The income growth largely reflects the higher level of passenger traffic, which surged by 15.4% to 2.07 million passengers.
Operating costs excluding depreciation increased by 2.4% to €12.6 million. MIA explained that this reflected the airport’s busier operations and the recruitment of new talent.
Since income increased at a faster pace than costs, EBITDA surged by 17.2% to €19.8 million compared to €16.9 million in the same period last year.
The profit before tax rose by 11.4% to €14.6 million compared to €13.1 million in the first quarter of 2025.
Overall, MIA generated a net profit of €9.31 million in the first quarter of the year compared to €8.47 million in the comparable period in 2025.
In terms of financial position as at 31 March 2026, when compared to 31 December 2025, total assets increased by 5.0% (or €18.6 million) to €391 million, which includes cash and cash equivalents of €35.7 million. Meanwhile, the airport operator remained free from any borrowings and the equity position strengthened by 3.5% (or €8.4 million) to €246 million.
MIA explained that capital expenditure for the quarter amounted to €11.3 million, principally related to the company’s five-year investment programme, including the expansion of the terminal towards the East and the construction of a new business centre that will house a business hotel.
