On 5 September, Malta International Airport plc published the August 2011 traffic results. The statistics reveal a 0.1% decline in passenger movements to 427,575 when compared to the monthly record of last year amounting to 427,924 passengers.
Aircraft movements and seat capacity declined by 9.5% and 7% respectively over the corresponding period last year whilst the average seat load factor increased by a significant 5.9 percentage points to 85.7% from 79.8% registered in August 2010.
The airport operator stated that the German market increased by a substantial 22.8% whilst Spain grew at a slower rate of 2.7%. Meanwhile, the UK posted a 1% rise during the month. On the other hand, Italy and France registered declines of 12.3% and 6.7% respectively.
During the first eight months of the year, MIA’s passenger movements have increased by 8.5% when compared to the same period last year – totalling 2.4 million passenger movements. This increase was mainly due to the increased seat capacity during the first four months of the year when compared to last year.
On 21 July MIA upgraded its passenger forecast for 2011. The airport operator is now expecting an increase of 3.2% during 2011 to a new record high of 3.4 million passenger movements.
