Malta International Airport plc - July Traffic Statistics

On 5 August, Malta International Airport plc published the July 2011 traffic results. The statistics reveal an increase of 3.4% in passenger movements to a record high of 415,780 passengers during July. Aircraft movements and seat capacity declined by 7.5% and 5.1% respectively over the corresponding period last year whilst the average seat load factor increased by a significant 6.9 percentage points to 84% from 77.1% registered in July 2010.

The airport operator stated that despite the overall increase in passenger numbers during the month of July, all core markets (except for Germany and the UK) registered declines with Italy, Spain and France showing a decrease of 14%, 7.7% and 0.7% respectively. The largest market, the UK, rose by 3.8% whilst the German market increased by a substantial 34.5% over July 2010.

During the first seven months of the year, MIA’s passenger movements have increased by 10.6% when compared to the same period last year – totalling 1.97 million passenger movements. This increase was mainly due to the increased seat capacity during the first four months of the year when compared to last year.

On 21 July MIA revised its passenger forecast for 2011 upwards. The airport operator is now forecasting an increase of 3.2% during 2011 to a new record high of 3.4 million passenger movements.
