Malta International Airport plc - March Traffic Results

On 7 April, Malta International Airport plc published the March 2017 traffic results revealing a 16.4% increase in passenger movements (+53,795 passengers) compared to the same month last year even though the Easter effect was registered in March last year. It is also important to highlight that, during March 2017, two new routes (Katowice in Poland and Cluj-Napoca in Romania) were launched.

The announcement also noted that more new connections are expected to commence in the coming weeks.

2016/17 Winter Season

March marks the end of the 2016/17 winter season (November to March) during which MIA welcomed over 1.6 million passengers representing a 25% increase over the previous comparable period on the back of a 19% increase in aircraft movements and a 26% growth in seat capacity. MIA registered double digit growth in each of the five months forming the winter season.

Outlook

MIA’s CEO Alan Borg expressed his satisfaction with the performance during the winter season. Furthermore, Mr Borg also stated that MIA have now launched its summer schedule and kicked off a Cruise and Fly programme, which are expected to give rise to even higher passenger traffic levels. In the meantime, MIA’s traffic development team is already looking ahead to next winter and making every effort to ensure that it is as successful as the one that just ended in line with the Company’s commitment to secure further year-round sustainable growth.
