Malta International Airport plc - July Traffic Results

On 8 August 2019, Malta International Airport plc announced its July traffic results revealing a 5.6% increase to 798,453 passenger movements compared to the same month last year. Furthermore, during the month of July, MIA registered a 4.5% increase in aircraft movements and seat capacity expanded by 5.6% whilst the seat load factor minimally eased to 87.0% from 87.1% in July 2018.

MIA also noted that its top five markets all registered growth during the month of July with Germany registering a growth of 18.2% followed by Spain with a 10% increase and France up 6.8%. Passenger numbers from the UK increased by 3.9% whilst passenger movements from Italy only improved by 1.5%. The announcement noted that the growth across these five main markets reflects the introduction of several new routes including Cardiff, Exeter, Genoa, Verona, Lamezia and Perugia. Furthermore, MIA also positively noted the extension of the Leipzig, Berlin and Hamburg routes into the summer months and increased capacity on several routes such as Rome Fiumicino, Lyon, Madrid, Valencia and Bilbao. The Cruise and Fly programme also contributed to the performance in the UK and German markets.

January – July 2019

During the first seven months of 2019, MIA welcomed over 4.05 million passengers, representing a 5.9% increase over the same period last year and in line with the full-year forecast provided by MIA at the start of 2019.

Last month, the airport operator also reiterated its target of handling 7.2 million passenger movements in 2019 (+5.8%).
