Malta International Airport plc - 2019 Traffic Results

On 8 January 2020, Malta International Airport plc issued an announcement revealing the 2019 traffic results.

During 2019, MIA registered a 7.4% increase in passenger movements to a new record of 7.31 million movements (2018: 6.81 million), marking the tenth successive year of traffic growth. The rise in passenger numbers came about from a 7.3% increase in seat capacity and an unchanged seat load factor of 81.8%

The 2019 passenger growth exceeded expectations since in mid-January 2019, MIA had announced that it was expecting passenger movements to increase by 5.8% during 2019 to 7.2 million.

The most popular markets were the United Kingdom (+2.2%), Italy (+3.4%), Germany (+9.0%), France (+10.8%) and Spain (+17.3%), all of which benefited from route developments and improved flight schedules for both the winter and summer months. Furthermore, for the first time in six years, the growth in the peak months (+7.6%) outpaced the growth registered in the off-peak months (+7.2%).

Over the course of 2019, MIA also welcomed a new airline, inaugurated 18 new routes across 3 continents and introduced other developments aimed at further enhancing the islands’ connectivity, particularly in the winter and shoulder months.

Malta International Airport will soon be publishing its traffic forecasts for 2020.
