MSE Equity Price Index hits new five-year high
Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.
The MSE Equity Price Index surged by 2.0% to a five-year high of 4,168.3 points as the gains in IHI, BOV, BMIT, APS and MIA outweighed the decline in Quinco. Bank of Valletta plc accounted for around half of today’s trading value in local equities as it advanced by 2.4% to the €2.13 level across fourteen deals amounting to 32,446 shares.
Also in the banking sector, APS Bank plc rose by 1.8% to the €0.58 level across nine deals amounting to 3,980 shares.
International Hotel Investments plc surged by 17.4% to the €0.64 level across five trades totalling 6,200 shares. The volume weighted average price of the day stood at €0.60.
Malta International Airport plc advanced by 0.8% to the €6.25 level albeit over low volumes. Yesterday, MIA announced that last week it bought 6,657 of its own shares at an average price of €6.15 per share. The company explained that the share buy-back programme will be suspended with immediate effect and will remain suspended until the announcement of the company’s next interim results. The programme will resume on the business day following the publication of these results.
BMIT Technologies plc gained 2.3% to the €0.264 level as 3,000 shares changed hands.
On the other hand, Quinco Holdings plc declined by 5.6% to the €0.85 level across three deals amounting to 15,000 shares.
Meanwhile, AX Real Estate plc closed unchanged at the €0.49 level across five trades totalling 47,400 shares.
Hili Properties plc held the €0.27 level on one deal of 20,000 shares.
Malta Properties Company plc closed unchanged at the €0.40 level across three trades totalling 1,150 shares.
The RF MGS Index snapped a five-session winning streak, as it fell by 0.27% to 899.426 points. Preliminary data released today indicated a slowdown in inflation in the euro area as it is expected to have eased to 2.8% in June from 3.2% in May and below the 3.0% which was previously forecasted. The was driven by a sharp deceleration in energy prices to 8.7% from 10.8% as well as a slowdown in core inflation to 2.4% from 2.6%.
