Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.

The MSE Equity Price Index rose by 0.24% to a fresh six-year high of 4,356.7 points as gains in HSBC, FIMBank and AX Real Estate outweighed declines in Malita and VBL, while eight others closed unchanged. Total trading value across local equities was modest at €0.35 million. Download today’s Equity Market Summary.

Bank of Valletta plc was once again the most actively traded equity, accounting for almost half of the day’s value as €0.17 million changed hands across 72,038 shares. BOV closed unchanged at €2.34.

Santumas Shareholdings plc was the next most active, with 81,966 shares worth €0.10 million changing hands as the equity traded flat at the €1.24 level across three deals.

APS Bank plc closed unchanged at the €0.595 level on volume totalling 44,792 shares.

Malta International Airport plc traded flat at €6.60 across 2,400 shares.

Furthermore, M&Z plc (€0.565), International Hotel Investments plc (€0.63), RS2 plc (€0.45) and Harvest Technology plc (€0.90) all closed unchanged, albeit on muted activity.

Among the gainers, FIMBank plc was the strongest performer, advancing 3.5% to USD0.296, its highest closing price since January 2022.

HSBC Bank Malta plc added 1.4% to €1.50 on a single trade of 2,600 shares.

AX Real Estate plc rose 2.9% to €0.535, also on one deal of 1,000 shares.

The only negative performers were Malita Investments plc, which eased 0.5% to €0.38 across 13,500 shares and VBL plc as it fell by 1.0% to €0.20 on 21,000 shares.

The RF MGS Index edged 0.10% higher to 885.7 points as eurozone sovereign bond yields eased slightly, with the German 10-year yield dropping by four basis points to 3.34% and the Italian equivalent by six basis points to 4.16%. Data published in the eurozone showed that producer prices rose by 5.8% in July, when compared to a year earlier. The figure is higher than the comparable figure of 4.6% recorded in June. Furthermore, the S&P Global Eurozone Composite PMI survey data for August showed that private sector business activity maintained the growth observed in July. Notably, new export orders rose for the first time in four and a half years, driven by the manufacturing sector.
