Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.

The MSE Equity Price Index added 0.30% to 4,369.6 points, its highest close since March 2020, as gains in BOV and VBL outweighed declines in APS Bank and Farsons, while seven others closed unchanged. Total trading value stood at €0.38 million. Download today’s Equity Market Summary.

Bank of Valletta plc was the most actively traded equity and accounted for nearly 70% of the total value traded across local equities as €0.27 million changed hands across 114,053 shares. BOV advanced by 0.9% to €2.36, its highest close since May 2006.

VBL plc was the other gainer, rising 13.0% to €0.226, although on trivial volume.

In contrast, APS Bank plc eased by 0.8% to €0.59 across 41,050 shares and Simonds Farsons Cisk plc fell by 0.8% to €6.05 on 3,969 shares.

PG plc traded flat at the €1.64 level across two deals totalling 14,521 shares.

AX Real Estate plc held the €0.535 level on a single deal of 24,000 shares.

RS2 plc also traded flat at €0.45 on two deals totalling 25,000 shares.

Furthermore, Malta International Airport plc (€6.60), BMIT Technologies plc (€0.268), Quinco Holdings plc (€0.83) and Malita Investments plc (€0.38) all closed unchanged, albeit on muted activity.

The RF MGS Index advanced by 0.07% to 886.3 points as eurozone sovereign bond yields eased marginally, with a sharper than expected fall in euro area retail sales adding to the case for weaker consumer demand. Today, Eurostat reported that retail sales in the euro area fell by 0.6% month-on-month in July, against market expectations of a 0.3% increase. The decline was led by non-food products, where sales fell by 1.4%, and particularly in Germany, where retail trade contracted by 3.4%. However, German factory orders rose by 2.5% on the month in July, well ahead of the 0.3% increase expected, although the gain rested on large orders for shipbuilding, rail vehicles and aircraft while bookings for the automotive industry fell by 12.5%.
