MGS 10-year yield hits 3-year high of 4.20%
Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.
The RF MGS Index fell for the third consecutive session and registered the sharpest daily decline in four months as it plunged by 0.54% to 878.2 points, its lowest level since the end of 2023. Based on the Central Bank of Malta bid prices, the Malta Government Stock 10-year yield now stands at 4.20%, and the 20-year yield is at 4.70%. The increase in yields was observed across the euro area sovereign bond market with the German 10-year surpassing the 3.50% level and the 20-year exceeding 3.85%, both at the highest level since 2011. The spike reflect further concerns on energy price inflation as the Brent crude oil price touched the USD100 per barrel. Data published yesterday showed that US producer prices rose by 5.4% year-on-year in August, driven by the increase to energy. In particular, diesel prices surged by 24.1% in the month to record levels.
The MSE Equity Price Index reversed yesterday’s gain as it shed 0.35% to 4,369.6 points. The declines in six equities outweighed the gains in Mapfre and Harvest, while seven others closed unchanged. Total trading value muted at less than €55,000. Download today’s Equity Market Summary.
