Passenger movements at MIA reach all-time high in May
Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.
The MSE Equity Price Index surged by 2.4% to a new five-year high of 4,168.208 points as the gains in the ordinary shares of RS2, MIDI, Quinco, MaltaPost, GO, Plaza and BOV outweighed the declines in Harvest, the preference shares of RS2, IHI, HSBC and PG. Malta International Airport plc closed unchanged at the €6.10 level across three deals amounting to 2,100 shares. Following the close of trading, MIA announced that passenger movements during May 2026 amounted to 1.08 million, which is 16.5% higher than the comparable figure of 927,709 registered last year. The May 2026 passenger movements mark a new monthly all-time record for MIA, exceeding the previous record of 1.07 million movements of August 2025. The seat load factor for May 2026 dipped by 1.4 percentage points to 83.5% driven by an 18.6% increase in seat capacity.
Malita Investments plc remained unchanged at the €0.366 level on a single deal of 5,693 shares.
APS Bank plc traded flat at the €0.57 level across eight trades totalling 28,301 shares.
Also in the banking sector, FIMBank plc held the USD0.185 level on a single deal of 72,900 shares.
Mapfre Middlesea plc remained unchanged at the €1.35 level over trivial volumes.
Hili Properties plc held the €0.27 level as 10,000 shares changed hands.
Also in the property sector, Malta Properties Company plc stayed at €0.364 on a single deal of 1,000 shares.
Simonds Farsons Cisk plc closed unchanged at the €6.20 level across two deals amounting to 1,050 shares.
Trident Estates plc closed unchanged at the €1.15 level across two trades totalling 1,750 shares.
Meanwhile, the ordinary shares of RS2 plc closed at the €0.82 level, but the weighted average price across the 137,512 shares that traded stood at €0.354 (+4.1%).
MIDI plc closed at the €0.26 level but the weighted average price across the 14,000 shares that traded stood at €0.226 (+13%).
Quinco Holdings plc recaptured the €0.90 level over three trades totalling 1,750 shares. Quinco traded at a weighted average price of €0.77 (+2.7%).
MaltaPost plc rose by 3.3% to the €0.444 level on one deal amounting to 11,108 shares.
GO plc advanced by 1.6% to the €2.50 level across as 6,000 shares changed hands.
Plaza Centres plc gained 1.2% to the €0.86 level across six deals amounting to 60,764 shares.
Bank of Valletta plc rose by 1.0% to the €2.06 level across twelve trades totalling 65,440 shares.
On the other hand, PG plc shed 0.6% to the €1.66 level on muted activity. Following the close of trading, PG announced that its subsidiary DB Gauci Shopping Mall Limited in which PG holds a 60% shareholding, entered into a deed of temporary sub-emphyteusis on 8 June 2026 with DB San Gorg Property Limited for the property comprising a proposed shopping mall and multiple car park spaces on the wider site of the old Institute for Tourism Studies at St George’s Bay, St Julians. The title of sub-emphyteusis will terminate on 31 January 2120.
Harvest Technologies plc declined by 9.1% to the €1.00 level as 9,000 shares changed hands.
The preference shares of RS2 plc shed 6.3% to the €0.30 level on one deal of 6,685 shares.
International Hotel Investments plc fell by 3.1% to the €0.62 level across four deals amounting to 11,275 shares.
HSBC Bank Malta plc declined by 2.1% to the €1.41 level across four trades totalling 5,234 shares.
The RF MGS Index rose by 0.45% to 894.703 points as oil prices fell to a three-month low of around USD86.5 per barrel amid growing hopes that the US and Iran could reach a peace agreement. In this respect, President Trump indicated a deal with Iran could be signed as early as this weekend. The agreement would involve the release of frozen Iranian funds, the suspension of sanctions, and the withdrawal of US forces.
