Following last week's article detailing the performance of the S&P 500 index in 2025, it is worth devoting time to review the developments across the European equity markers in my last article of the year.

The MSE Equity Price Index edged 0.13% lower to 4,363.2 points as the declines in BMIT, APS and BOV outweighed the gains in The Convenience Shop, Malta Properties, HSBC and Computime. A further three equities closed unchanged and total trading value dropped to €0.13 million from €0.54 million in the previous session. Download today’s Equity Market Summary.

The Convenience Shop (Holding) plc closed the session 18.9% higher at €0.88, although the weighted average price across the 12,500 shares that traded stood at €0.751 (+1.5%). Yesterday evening, the company announced that certain shareholders had informed the Board that a number of prospective purchasers are interested in acquiring a substantial shareholding in the company. Discussions remain preliminary and no binding agreement has been entered into. In this respect, the company will hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Friday 16 October 2026 for shareholders to consider a resolution authorising the company to share, in confidence, unpublished price-sensitive information with bona fide prospective purchasers. Shareholders as at close of trading on Monday 14 September 2026 will receive an explanatory circular and be entitled to participate and vote at the EGM.

HSBC Bank Malta plc was today’s most actively traded equity, representing 37% of total trading value, as it rose 0.7% to €1.49 across five deals totalling 31,737 shares.

Malta Properties Company plc jumped 9.2% to €0.45, its highest level since March, across six deals totalling 20,000 shares.

Computime Holdings plc edged 1.0% higher to €0.505, its highest level since listing in January 2025, on a single trade of 7,800 shares. Computime shareholders as at the close of trading on Monday 28 September 2026 will receive a net interim dividend of €0.012325 per share by Friday 16 October 2026.

In contrast, Bank of Valletta plc slipped by 0.4% to €2.39 across eight deals totalling 6,068 shares. Today, BOV announced that it will keep its lending base rates for its main categories of loans unchanged for the three months covering October to December 2026, following its review of interest rate trends and current market conditions. In this respect, the Business Bank Base Rate and the Home Loans Bank Base Rate will both stay at 2.15% per annum, while the Personal Loans Bank Base Rate will remain at 2.45% per annum.

Also in the banking sector, APS Bank plc fell by 3.3% to €0.585 across five deals totalling 16,203 shares.

BMIT Technologies plc dropped 4.6% to €0.248, its lowest level since listing in February 2019, across five deals totalling 53,600 shares.

Malta International Airport plc traded flat at the €6.55 level across two deals totalling 1,213 shares.

Plaza Centres plc held the €0.83 level on a single trade of 9,329 shares. Yesterday, Plaza announced that on 22 September it entered into a promise of sale agreement to acquire the commercial premises at 16 Tower Road, Sliema, adjacent to the Plaza Commercial Centre. The final deed of sale is expected to be concluded by 2 April 2027.

AX Real Estate plc stayed at €0.535 on a single trade of 11,000 shares.

The RF MGS Index fell by 0.16% to 874.0 points reflecting the further rise in eurozone sovereign bond yields since yesterday, with the German 10-year yield climbing above 3.6% for the first time since June 2009 amid firmer expectations that the ECB will raise interest rates further since inflation will remain higher than its target for longer. Yesterday, the Ifo Business Climate Index showed German business sentiment improving to 89.9 in September, its highest reading since May 2023 and comfortably ahead of expectations.

Today, the Treasury Department announced the issue of two new Malta Government Stocks for an aggregate nominal amount of €300 million subject to an over-allotment option of up to a further €200 million. The two new fixed-rate stocks offered to both retail and institutional investors are the 4.30% MGS 2037 (II) and the 4.50% MGS 2041 (III). The prices of these two new MGSs will be announced on Thursday 1 October 2026. Subscriptions for the General Public open on Monday 5 October 2026 and close on Wednesday 7 October 2026. On the other hand, tenders in the form of sealed bids will open on Friday 9 October 2026 and close on the same day at 12:00 hrs (noon) – or earlier at the discretion of the Accountant General.
