Malta International Airport plc - October 2011 Traffic Results

On 3 November, Malta International Airport plc published the October 2011 traffic results. The statistics reveal a 4.4% increase in passenger movements to 346,480 when compared to the same month last year – the second consecutive time the 300,000th passenger mark was reached during the month of October. MIA explained that this increase was achieved despite a 6.5% decline in seat capacity to 430,199 seats. In fact, the average seat load factor increased by 8.3 percentage points to 80.5% from 72.2% registered in October 2010.

The airport operator stated that the German market registered a significant increase of 24% whilst the UK market only grew by 2.1% during the month under review. On the other hand, the Spanish, Italian and French markets all registered declines during the month of October of 5.6%, 4.8% and 1.7% respectively.

During the first ten months of the year, MIA’s passenger movements have grown by 7.3% when compared to the same period last year – totalling 3,128,418 passenger movements. This increase was mainly due to the increased seat load factor to 76.5% (71.5% between January and October 2010) together with a marginal increase in seat capacity.

On 19 October Malta International Airport plc announced that it is upgrading its forecast for passenger growth for 2011 from the level of +3.2% announced in July to at least +4.5%.
