Malta International Airport plc - April Traffic Results

On 4 May, Malta International Airport plc published the traffic results for April 2012. The statistics reveal a 1.4% increase in passenger movements when compared to the same month last year to 304,198, representing a record for the month of April. This rise was achieved in spite of a 3.3% decline in seat capacity which was more than offset by the 3.5 percentage point increase in the average seat load factor from 73% in April 2011 to 76.5% during the month under review.

The statistics also showed increases during the month for the French (+4.1%), Spanish (+3.3%), German (+2.2%) and Italian (+0.5%) markets. On the other hand, the UK market registered a 0.8% decline.

January – April 2012

During the first four months of 2012, MIA experienced a 2.6% decline in passengers when compared to the same period last year. The drop, equivalent to just over 23,000 passenger movements, was mainly due to the 7.9% decline in seat capacity (brought about by a 7% reduction in aircraft movements). This was partially compensated for by the 3.9 percentage point increase in the seat load factor to 71.5%.

During the January to April period, the Spanish and Italian markets registered double digit declines of 23.6% and 11.2% respectively. Moreover, passenger movements from the French market declined by 3.6% whilst the UK market saw a marginal 0.3% drop. On the other hand, the German market registered a 14.4% rise in passenger numbers.
