Malta International Airport plc - 2012 Airline Incentive Programme

On 3 August, Malta International Airport plc issued an update of its Incentive Programme for 2012. The programme comprises seven incentives (detailed below) aimed to support growth in its passenger traffic on a year-round basis.

New Routes

MIA will be offering reductions on the Passenger Service Charge (PSC), of between 10% to 40%, for new routes which have not been served from Malta in the last 12 months by direct flights. Airlines would have to at least operate two frequencies per week both during the summer and winter periods. The discounts will be applicable for the first three years of operation.

Strategic Routes

MIA have also identified a number of strategic destinations, predominantly in Eastern Europe, to which it will be granting more attractive rebates on the Passenger Service Charge (PSC) than those offered in respect of the ‘New Routes’ incentive. The strategic markets are: Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Russia (excluding Moscow), Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Israel, France (Nantes and Nice), Switzerland (excluding Zurich), Portugal and Germany (Leipzig and Dresden). The rebates offered vary from 20% to 60% on condition that the airline operates at least two frequencies per week both during the summer and winter periods.

Transfer Traffic

In a bid to promote Malta as a hub, MIA is offering rebates on the Passenger Service Charge (PSC) to airlines using MIA as a transfer airport subject to a minim number of transfer passengers. MIA will refund €8 per departing transfer passenger.

Free Landings in Winter

The winter season, which runs from November and March, represents the shoulder months for MIA. In order to boost traffic during this period, MIA will be offering a full rebate on landing fees from November 2012 to March 2013. This incentive was also offered during the 2011/2012 winter season.

Non-EU Traffic

Until March 2013, MIA will offer a €4 rebate per departing passenger to any airline which operates a minimum of two frequencies per week throughout the season to any non-EU destination.

Free Parking

This incentive is intended to encourage airlines to consider night-stops in Malta thus offering improved connectivity through better timings. MIA is offering a full rebate on parking, both in winter and summer, to all scheduled passenger flights stopping in Malta at night.

Rebate on Night Surcharge

To further entice night traffic, MIA is also offering to waive the night surcharge that is normally applicable to the landing fee for aircraft movements that take place at night.  The incentive, which targets airlines offering scheduled operations throughout the whole year, is valid until March 2013.
