Malta International Airport plc - October Traffic Results

On 8 November 2019, Malta International Airport plc announced its October traffic results revealing an 8.8% increase in passenger movements to more than 700,000 passengers for the first time during the month of October. MIA also noted that during the last days of October, it welcomed the first flights from Paphos, Trieste and Santiago de Compostela.

Summer Season

October marks the end of MIA’s summer season which runs from April to October. During this seven-month period, MIA registered 5.14 million passenger movements representing a 7.7% increase over the previous comparable period on the back of a 5.6% increase in aircraft movements and a 6.8% growth in seat capacity.

MIA’s CEO Alan Borg commented that “with another successful summer behind us, the focus has now been shifted to ensuring that the winter and off-peak months deliver results that are in line with our strategy, which is aimed at attracting year-round tourism to the islands”.

January – October 2019

During the ten-month period to 31 October 2019, a total of 6.3 million passenger movements were registered, representing an increase of 6.7% over the previous corresponding period last year. In the announcement, MIA noted that the results achieved up until the end of October indicate that the airport operator is on course to close 2019 with a new traffic milestone of more than seven million passenger movements. MIA had stated on 17 January 2019 that it is expecting passenger movements to increase by 5.8% during the whole of 2019 to 7.2 million.
