Malta International Airport plc - April Traffic Results

On 09 May 2023, Malta International Airport plc published the April 2023 traffic results. For the fourth consecutive month, passenger movements exceeded their relative 2019 figures, reaching a record figure of 708,388 passenger movements, being 8.4% higher than the same month in 2019. The figure is 38% higher than the movements registered in the same month last year.

Meanwhile, the seat load factor for April 2023 stood at 84.6%, compared to 77.8% in April 2022 and 83.4% pre-pandemic, in April 2019. The airport operator stated that the Easter weekend registered peak activity, with 98,449 passengers passing through its doors.

MIA explained that Italy remained the most popular destination followed by the UK, France and Germany. Spain overtook Poland as the 5th most popular destination as flights to Seville and Valencia resumed, with the summer schedule increasing the frequency of flights to Barcelona.

Since the start of 2023, MIA welcomed a total of 1.95 million passengers, representing an increase of 5.3% over the corresponding period in 2019.

On 18 January 2023, MIA had projected that during 2023, total passenger movements would amount to 6.3 million. This would represent a further 7.7% growth over the 5.85 million passenger movements of 2022 and would translate into an 86% recovery of the record pre-pandemic traffic in 2019 which amounted to 7.31 million passengers.
