Malta International Airport plc - December Traffic Results & 2024 Forecasts

On 11 January 2024, Malta International Airport plc published the December 2023 traffic results and provided key performance targets for 2024.

December 2023 Traffic Results

In December, MIA welcomed a record monthly record of 529,041 passengers, which is 10.8% higher than the movements handled in the same month in 2019. The December 2023 movements were also 25.5% higher than the movements registered in the same month last year.  Consequently, all monthly passenger movements throughout 2023 exceeded the corresponding 2019 levels.

The seat load factor for December 2023 was 78.3%, which is 4.1 percentage points higher than in December 2019.

In terms of popular destinations, Italy remained the top market with a market share of 22%, followed by the UK, Poland, Germany and France.

Full-Year 2023 Traffic Results

Passenger movements at MIA in 2023 reached a record of just over 7.8 million, in line with the revised guidance published by MIA last November. The 2023 passenger movements exceeded the previous record of 7.31 million passenger movements registered in 2019 by 6.7%. Passenger movements in 2023 were 33.4% higher than the movements registered in the previous year.

Key Performance Targets for 2024

The airport operator also announced its key targets for this year. For 2024, MIA expects:

  • Passenger movements of 8 million compared to the 2023 figure of 7.8 million.
  • Revenue of €126 million compared to the 2023 forecast of €118 million.
  • EBITDA of €79 million compared to the 2023 forecast of €74 million.
  • Net profit of €42 million compared to the 2023 forecast of €40 million.
  • Capital investments of €45 million.
