Malta International Airport plc - March Traffic Results
On 9 April 2024, Malta International Airport plc announced that passenger movements in March 2024 amounted to 633,826, which is the highest-ever figure achieved in the month of March, exceeding the previous record of March 2023 by 30.1%.
MIA commented that passenger volumes reached their peak in the last week of the month due to the long easter weekend as well as the commencement of the Cruise and Fly services offered by P&O Cruises whose operations will extend to October.
MIA also recorded a 24.6% increase in seat capacity when compared to last year. Despite the higher capacity, the seat load factor for March 2024 reached a record figure for the month of March of 87.2%, compared to 83.5% in March 2023. Aircraft movements also increased by 20.5% from the previous year to 4,031 take-offs and landings.
The airport operator explained that Italy, the UK, and Germany remained the top three markets in March with a market share of over 50%. Meanwhile, Poland grew by more than 80% over 2023 and surpassed France as the airport’s fourth largest market.
MIA also noted that March 2024 marked the inaugural flight of KM Malta Airlines following the last flight of Air Malta on 31 March. During the month, Universal Air also commenced operations from the airport.
In the first three months of the year, MIA welcomed a total of 1,573,712 passengers, exceeding last year’s record for Q1 2023 by 26.3%.
